Ommegang Abbey Ale - Cooperstown, NY

Being in New York means taking advantage of some of the best beers in the Northeast, and how can you look past a brew from the home of our nation's pastime...Cooperstown, NY. Having called the Pacific Northwest my home for many years, I've been subjected to some of the best beers around, but the Northeast should not be excluded from that list. The Ommegang Brewery has considerable buzz surrounding it, so I figured that it was high time that I give this big beer a try. Here's what the website had to say:

Meditate on this dark ruby elixir. Breathe in its deep emanations of fruit and spice. Is that clove you smell? Licorice? Fig? Sip serenely as revelations of honey, toffee, chocolate and dark dried fruit delight your senses. Can a beer be holy? you wonder, and Where can I get a grail on-line?

Ommegang, our first brew, was inspired by the centuries-old brewing practices of the Belgian Trappist monks. This burgundian brew gives off a variety of aromas, including plum and cinnamon, and packs in flavors such as caramel, toffee, and licorice. At 8.5% abv, it is known to cause spontaneous meditation.

Three flavors come to mind; honey, then caramel, then toffee. At first, I couldn't put my finger on it, because the flavors almost seem to evolve as I went through this brew. The complexity is mind-boggling. The pour was smooth with what can only be described a fluffy head. This one needs to be sipped to be truly enjoyed. I was constantly blown away by the layers in this brew. Enjoy it with any rich savory dish.
