Hennepin - Ommegang Brewery - Cooperstown, NY

Once again, I find myself at the doorstep of The Ommegang Brewery. Since my arrival in New York, about a year ago, the Ommegang Brewery has continued to impress me over and over again. This time, it's the Hennepin that's grabbed my attention. Here's what the website had to say:

Hennepin Farmhouse Saison

As you pour this rich golden ale into your glass, consider your surroundings. Are you in a restaurant? Outside on the deck? Is it hot and humid? Cold and brisk? Take a drink. Feel the way Hennepin is bright and lively in your mouth with a warming mix of spicy gingersnap and citrusy hops. Refreshing. Relaxing. It's true: no matter where you are, Hennepin is the perfect ale for all seasons.

'I DRINK THE BEER THAT GOD WOULD DRINK: HENNEPIN. I ACTUALLY BELIEVE IT WAS TOUCHED BY THE HAND OF GOD. IT'S RIDICULOUS - I COULD DRINK IT EVERY DAY.'

-Craig Samuals, The Smoke Joint -

Try Hennepin with:

Rustic fare such as quiche, bread and cheeses, roasted chicken, fresh water fish, including shellfish (especially lobster). Hennepin's coriander and ginger notes lend themselves to the composed spicing in Asian cuisines. It goes well with Thai and Indian cuisine, sushi, Mongolian hotpots, fried fish, spare ribs and Peking duck.

Reviews:

"Despite Saison's relative obscurity, there are several excellent American examples. Brewery Ommegang, in Cooperstown, New York, has been making its version, Hennepin, for five years. It's a bit sweeter than the Duponts, with a nice balance and notes of tropical fruit." -GOURMET MAGAZINE

"Raw and complex yet oh so drinkable, impossible to tell it would have been from NY in a blind tasting. One of our favourites, bring a couple of 750 ml bottles to the dinner party and see if this sparks anyone’s interest away from wine ." TODD ALSTROM is President and Co-founder of BEER ADVOCATE.COM

(I sent the following to about 70 of my friends) How sad that we learn some very important things at the late stages of our lives. I have spent a lifetime, well at least from about 16 to 85 looking for the perfect beer. Eureka, today I found it. I have no stock in the company, no vested interest, no axe to grind, but today I had a bottle of Hennepin Beer from the Ommegang Brewery. It has an alcohol content of 7.7% and a superb body and taste. Since I love you all, I am passing on my discovery. Robert (85 years old)

Review:

The Ommegang Brewery has a way of packaging some of the most powerful beers into some of the smallest packages. This Beer straight up kicks ass. Again, here's one of the many things that make the Northeast so beautiful...the Ommegang Brewery. The Hennepin starts off with a great floral bouquet, but finishes with a slap-the-crap-out-of-you amount of flavor. The beer is bold, assertive and taunting. The flavor is unique, but not unlikeable. All in all, this is a great beer.

RATING: 8/10
